What is ADSL Broadband?Broadband is a high bandwidth internet connection. It's called broadband because it has a much larger capacity to receive and send data. Broadband gives you a reliable, high-speed and secure internet connection through a standard telephone line. Unlike dial-up connections, Broadband delivers an 'always on' internet connection. Uk Broadband Provider's packs offer connection speeds of up to 40 times faster than a 56K modem, enabling you to surf the net and download files more quickly and more easily. How does ADSL Broadband work? The ADSL broadband service makes use of your existing telephone line by splitting the line into two channels - one for voice (low frequency) and the other for the high speed data connection (high frequency). ADSL technology increases the bandwidth possible over the line. What are the minimum computer requirements for ADSL Broadband?Your PC must have the following: • Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Me (Millennium Edition), Windows 2000 or Windows XP • At least a Pentium 233 MHz processor or equivalent • At least 32MB system memory (RAM) • A spare USB (Universal Serial Bus) port • Anti Virus software (virus protection is essential when surfing the net) What are Contention Ratios? Contention ratios are the number of users you share your available bandwidth with. For example, if you choose one of our business packages with a contention ratio of 20:1, you are potentially sharing your available bandwidth with up to 20 other subscribers. If I have ADSL Broadband installed Can I keep my existing phone number?Yes – your existing phone number is unaffected by installation of the UK Broadband Provider broadband service. Do I have to pay Internet call charges with broadband? No – because you are always connected, there are no call costs for your Internet access. All you pay is a flat rate monthly fee. Your normal telephone line is unaffected for making voice calls, and you would still be responsible for paying for these through BT. Can I use my phone and surf the net at the same time? Yes – one of the many benefits about broadband is that it will allow you to be online and use your phone at the same time without having to install a separate phone line. How do I know if I am eligible for broadband services? To find out if you can receive broadband in your area please enter your telephone number within the broadband availability search found on our home page. All details entered will be treated as confidential. We will then respond as quickly as we can to let you know if broadband is available to you. How quickly can I be connected to broadband? If you are in a broadband enabled area, it takes approximately 10 working days from your date of order to get your line activated for broadband, as there are further tests we must do before the connection can be completed. How is the UK Broadband Provider broadband service activated?Once you have placed your order with us your BT telephone line will automatically be enabled for you to use broadband. Once your order has been processed, we will send you an installation pack along with your modem or router containing simple instructions on how to get your computer online with UK Broadband Provider. Do I have to buy an ADSL modem?Yes, you will need an ADSL modem to use broadband Internet access. If you have your own you can use this. If not you can purchase a modem from us when signing up. The modems we sell are specifically chosen for their reliability. How and when will I be billed for the UK Broadband Provider service? You have a choice of paying for your broadband service either monthly or yearly. If you decide to pay monthly for the service we will require you to set-up a standing order for the amount applicable. The connection and modem charges are payable immediately when the service becomes active. If my phone service is cut off, can I still use my broadband service? No - you will still be billed for the broadband service after your service has been cut-off. If your telephone service is suspended for any reason, you should contact us immediately to arrange to close your broadband account; however we require at least 1 month’s notice for any account cancellation. How do I change my payment details? You can contact us on 0871 288 1434 to change any of your billing or account details. What should I do if I move location? If you are planning to move location, you will need to let us know at least one month before you'd like to terminate your broadband service. Once you are at your new premises, we will set up a new account for you and you will need to pay the current connection fee, and then continue with your monthly payments.
